Diocese and Bishops
We are part of the Church of England Diocese in Europe, which stretches from North Africa to Russia, has its Cathedral in Gibraltar and its bishops in Brussels.
It has all the features of a normal diocese in England, but stretched over a vast area. Our Chaplain is Area Dean for that part of the Diocese that includes Denmark, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Sweden - and Iceland.
Decisions are made by an annual diocesan synod of elected clergy and laypeople and by the bishops’ council
The Diocesan Office in London has support staff for the chaplaincies, including a Safeguarding team. Chaplaincies pay a share of their income for this arrangement.
The Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe is Robert Innes. He is the chief pastor and provides episcopal oversight, working with colleagues lay and ordained to shape the life of the Diocese. He has a blog.
The Suffragan Bishop in waiting is Andrew Norman. He takes up his role in February 2025.
